Were the All Blacks poisoned before 1995 Rugby World Cup final – Francois Pienaar, say no proof.

Rugby World Cup winning former South African captain Francois Pienaar says controversy will always dog the 1995 final despite no proof that the All Blacks were deliberately poisoned before the game.

A diarrhoea and vomiting bug swept through the All Blacks two days before the final, won 15-12 by South Africa in extra-time.

Wing Jeff Wilson threw up on the side of the Ellis Park pitch and had to be replaced in the final. Goalkicker Andrew Mehrtens was also badly affected.

The problem was later linked to tea and coffee at the All Black’s Johannesburg hotel.

The All Blacks’ coach Laurie Mains once suspected a waitress called Suzie, who disappeared from the hotel before the game, could have been responsible.

Pienaar admitted – in a recent interview with the Forsyth Barr investments company’s Rugby and Markets service – that the issue would probably never be resolved.

There was so much controversy you know, there were investigators appointed that couldn’t find anything,” he said. I’m just saying that if these people were poisoned and then can go into extra time and play at that level and at that pace then it’s quite impressive. I think it will always be a controversial topic.”

Pienaar said he had no inkling before the 1995 final that the All Blacks were ill.

Not at all, and there’s been quite a number of conversations around that. I had the pleasure of becoming very close with Jonah Lomu. You know Jonah was a fan of South Africa and he never said that there was anything that bothered him.”

A South African security guard Rory Steyn, who worked with the All Blacks in 1995, was adamant the All Blacks had been deliberately poisoned.

Steyn, who was once South African president Nelson Mandela’s bodyguard, wrote in his biography, One Step Behind Mandela , in 2000 that immediately after the All Blacks visited a cinema Wilson suffered severe stomach cramps and prop Richard Loe vomited. Full story here
