Weekly Roundup: Bitcoin Ekasi Launches a Financial Literacy Hub in South Africa & More
In this week’s news roundup, you will read about the launch of a financial literacy education centre in South Africa by Bitcoin Ekasi, Ugandan crypto firm’s funding award by the Interledger Foundation, and more.
Bitcoin Ekasi Launches a Financial Literacy Education Centre in South Africa
Bitcoin Ekasi , a non-profit organization based in South Africa that’s seeking to create a Bitcoin economy in Mossel Bay, South Africa, has announced the launch of the Bitcoin Ekasi Centre. The centre will provide education on financial literacy and Bitcoin to businesses, entrepreneurs, and the local youth.
The centre was co-founded by Hermann Vivier, who is also the co-founder of The Surfer Kids, a non-profit that teaches life skills and surfing to disadvantaged kids in the same locale in partnership with Paxful and the Built with Bitcoin Foundation. The centre has already enrolled 20 kids to its program and established 10 stores in the area that will receive payment in Bitcoin.

“ We recently celebrated Bitcoin Ekasi’s first anniversary and it’s a surreal feeling to officially open the centre. In that time I have witnessed financial empowerment through bitcoin – affecting seemingly unrelated social issues in positive ways. Through the Bitcoin Ekasi Centre, I am honored that our team will be able to grow this movement and inspire other communities to think differently about money ,” said Vivier.
The centre will offer basic English and Math to the younger residents while adults will get training on foundational Bitcoin topics.
CryptoSavannah Gets Funding Award, Joins Interledger Foundation 2022 Cohort
CryptoSavannah , a Ugandan blockchain and crypto firm, has been awarded a grant by the Interledger Foundation that will be used for financial services research and development.
The Interledger Foundation is an organisation that champions advocacy for Interledger, an open protocol that permits frictionless payments and micropayments across currencies and ledgers, enabling opportunities for broader global financial inclusion.
As a digital transformation company that’s building technology solutions and providing advisory services to usher Africa into the digital economy, CryptoSavannah is currently working on a Universal Wallet that will address the existing challenges facing existing programs in loyalty and rewards programs. The company’s solution is a single digital wallet that’s a simple mobile application that will be used to capture and manage rewards.
In addition, the Universal Wallet will be an entry point to identity, which is the cornerstone of the digital economy, while also creating an interoperable platform that will facilitate a wide range of financial applications. The platform seeks to extend financial inclusion by enabling people to have a wallet that accepts value, stores it, and can be used for transactions.
